I have been writing since I was a kid. I was told that my very first story was called “The Witch Who Blew Out The Moon,” but I have only the vaguest memory of it. My mother collected a lot of my childhood writings and later gave them to me. They are hilarious, full of big knobby handwriting and magical thinking.

I loved to read and still do. At any given time, I have several books I’m feasting on along with several magazine articles. These days, I’m reading Pay Attention, Carter Jones, Brown Girl Dreaming, Mink River, and Ursula Under. I think books are the reason I love trees so much. Books are made of paper, and paper comes from trees. And my house, I’m happy to say, is an island in a sea of trees.

After college I attended Michigan State and received a M.A. in creative writing. Soon afterward I taught English comp and developmental writing as an adjunct prof. Then some bunch of years later, I went back for my M.F.A. in a wonderful writing program on Whidbey Island, Washington. The walking stick I received upon graduating is one of my most prized possessions.

In between times, I published a few pieces, in the Wonderland Magazine of The Grand Rapids Press, The PrePress Awards, The Awakenings Review, and Cicada Magazine and self-published a middle grade sci-fi fantasy called The Second Navigon.

These days when I’m not writing, I like to take motorcycle trips with my husband and friends around the U.S. and travel to some far flung, lesser known places like Slovenia, home to Lake Bled and the pletna boats, and Croatia and the Plitvice Lakes National Park.
